A Note to GITC Teachers & School Staff from the Executive Director
April 12, 2021
Dear Friends,
As we each do our best to continue to preserve everyone's health and prevent the spread of COVID-19, Guitars and Ukes in the Classroom is acting in accordance with state and national recommendations and rules regarding our services. These are changing almost daily so we will keep you posted as things evolve. For teachers and staff participating in GITC courses or residencies, here are the headlines:
For teachers with classroom teaching artist residencies in LA or San Diego, your teaching artist has our green light to work with you to adapt the teaching schedule to virtual, hybrid or in-person instruction.
If you are playing instruments in your classroom, please ask students to wash their hands before they play. We recommend teaching kids a 25 second hand washing song to "Row Your Boat" with verses for lathering soap, scrubbing well, rinsing off, drying hands, and mopping up the sink! In addition, we suggest that you take the time to wipe down the instruments with antibacterial wipes after students use them.
Students should sit six feet apart and wear masks when they sing. Singing outdoors is recommended and encouraged.
We also recommend that students who are playing instruments and singing in your class be seated face forward at least 6 feet away from each other on all sides. Seating students in rows all facing forward may be safer that students singing while facing each other in a circle.
To minimize the risk of the spread of germs and COVID-19 if students are singing indoors, please consider choosing just 3-5 students at a time to be the designated singers for the group. To give all students the chance to sing, you can choose new singers for each song.
With all this care, I am hoping you can have classrooms of happy, healthy music makers who can sing their worries way! I want to thank our staff for all their extra help getting safety information out to everyone in our musical community!
